A Conversation with Heather Mizeur

The March 20 meeting of the 33rd Democratic Club was highlighted by an address from Delegate Heather Mizeur (Democrat, 20th MD Legislative District)), candidate for Governor of the State of Maryland, who spoke to a crowd of approximately 40 members and guests. She was extremely well received by the group - there was a very positive energy in the room. Delegate Mizeur shared her vision for our state, and explained the progressive goals that she has set for her administration. Subjects covered included the economy and taxes, education (preschool through college), voting rights, and other social justice issues. She also discussed her choice of running mate, pastor Delman Coates, a long-time civil rights leader who firmly supports a clear separation of church and state.

As is often the case, our group asked many interesting questions, all of which Del. Mizeur handled with insight and good grace. She concluded her comments by noting that, if elected, she and Mr. Coates would govern the state as a lesbian woman and a black man - "We're done with identity politics!"

For more information about Del. Mizeur, please check out her website: http://www.heathermizeur.com/

Also attending the meeting were a number of candidates for local office in our area: Patrick Armstrong, who is running for the AA County Council in the 5th District, and three candidates for the AA County Democratic Central Committee: Judy Moylan-Forman, Betsy Bury, and Torrey Jacobsen.

Once again the meeting was enhanced by the good food and efficient service provided by our new host location, Hellas Restaurant in Millersville. Although we still miss Perry's, this new location seems to be working out very well for our club. If you've not yet visited us there, please consider coming to the next meeting. We meet most months on the third Thursday, 6pm dinner/social time, 7pm (approximate) main program. Hope to see you soon!
